The short answer
ESEF, the European Single Electronic Format, is the EU’s required format for the annual financial reports of issuers whose securities trade on an EU regulated market. Reports are published as XHTML, and consolidated IFRS financial statements are tagged with inline XBRL.

ESEF in practice
ESEF applies to financial years beginning on or after 1 January 2020, with some member states allowing a one-year delay. It makes listed European companies’ financials machine-readable in the same way XBRL does in the US.
Each ESEF report is a single package: the annual financial report in XHTML, with the primary financial statements tagged against the IFRS taxonomy, so figures such as revenue or total equity can be read directly and compared across countries and languages.
Why ESEF matters
- Comparable, primary-source financials for EU-listed companies.
- A route to financial data in countries whose registers do not publish private-company accounts openly.
ESEF in MarketPrior
MarketPrior reads ESEF annual financial reports of EU/EEA regulated-market issuers via filings.xbrl.org and uses them in the financials section of reports, cited to the report.
