The short answer
SIRENE is the French national register of companies and their establishments, run by INSEE. Each company has a nine-digit SIREN number; each of its establishments has a fourteen-digit SIRET, made of the SIREN plus a five-digit establishment code.

SIRENE, SIREN and SIRET in practice
SIRENE records each unit’s legal form, main activity (NAF code), address, creation date and status. It is open data under the Licence Ouverte, with an API that requires a free key.
Because each establishment carries its own SIRET, a company’s physical footprint — head office, branches, shops — can be read directly from SIRENE, and a new SIRET is a dated sign of expansion.
Why SIRENE, SIREN and SIRET matter
- SIREN is the anchor identifier for a French company.
- New SIRETs reveal new sites and expansion.
- NAF codes make industry filtering possible.
